agnès b. - exhibition at C/O Berlin
From October 11 till December 7, C/O Berlin presents two interesting exhibitions about photography at the same time.
agnès b. Collection of Photography
Rapidly executed chalk drawings on interior walls, text fragments scrawled on paper, deep footsteps in the sand – people inscribe themselves in the most varied ways on their environments, leaving behind traces and stories. Illusion and reality as the definition of human existence: the Collection agnès b. devotes itself not only to the person as a surface projection of the Self, but to the social, cultural, and aesthetic conditions of life.
C/O Berlin will present, for the first time outside of France, about 200 photographs from one of the most renowned contemporary photographic collections. The exhibition is spanning the period from the emergence of the medium to contemporary independent photography. Besides renowned photographers such as Diane Arbus, Andy Warhol, Nan Goldin, Brassai und Robert Mapplethorpe also more recent perspectives such as Ryan McGinley and Ingar Krauss are represented. Editions JRP Ringier will publish a book on the collection, offering a unique view into the creative universe of fashion designer, gallery owner and collector agnès b.
Talents 13 . Leaving Again
What is that person doing climbing urban street trees? Why is he pretending to walk standing on his head in the middle of a street, and why is he dive-rolling under automatic garage doors just as they are about to close? With these kinds of staged situations, entirely disconnected from everyday life, Sebastian Stumpf counteracts the commonness of everyday actions, conditioned spatial experience, and established visual conventions—and by neglecting to provide any answers, he unsettles the viewer’s gaze. In the exhibition “Leaving, again,” Sebastian Stumpf uses video and photography to call into question the boundaries of spaces and images, as well as their reception by viewers. The starting point for his self-stagings are snapshots of reality and structues of urban “nature.” Within this context, his projections create a spontaneous re-creation of a particular spatial situation.
C/O Berlin presents the slide series “marcher dans l‘air” and “marcher à l‘envers,” the video works “Trees” and “Underground Parking Garages” for the first time in Berlin, as well as the video installation “Performance (#16),” which Sebastian Stumpf conceived specifically for the stairwell of the Postfuhramt.
The exhibitions “agnès b. Collection of Photography” and “Talents 13 . Leaving Again” take place from October 11 till December 7 at C/O Berlin im Postfuhramt, Oranienburger Str / Tucholskystr in 10117 Berlin. www.co-berlin.com
