Benicio del Toro as Wolfman

Thumb

Benicio del Toro will play the main character in a remake by Joe Johnston (Hidalgo, Jurassic Park III) of the 67 year old movie.

The Universal movie will hit the theaters in April 2009 and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly‘s Lindsay Soll makeup artist and six-time Oscar winner Rick Baker now talked about how he transformed Benicio del Toro into Wolfman.

The hair on his face gets applied bits by bits with glue, which is a technique they already used back in 1941. In comparison to other makeups Baker has done, the three hours that it takes to transform del Toro are pretty average compared to the eight hours he has spent on his most expensice makeups in the past.

Except from the teeth, the makeup has to be redone every day and the fact that Benicio’s bone structure already comes close to the final Wolfman look doesn’t make it easier cause “Here we have Benicio Del Toro, who’s practically the Wolfman already, to Benicio Del Toro with more hair and bigger teeth.”

In the end, as Rick Baker pointed out, the job overall was easier than turning Eddie Murphy into an believable old Chinese man because the audience tends to be more critical when it comes to human beings. “You don’t necessarily see werewolves or aliens every day, so you can accept those kinds of things.”
