Berghain 02 by Marcel Dettmann - Review

For some - especially if they come from foreign countries - Berghain is the best club of the world.

That Berghain with it’s Panoramabar isn’t just a club but meanwhile gives it’s name to records is quite new. Marcel Dettmann, Berghain resident was now entrusted to leave his fingerprint on “Berghain 02”, which is the latest compilation of the Berlin club. After the first release in the Berghain series, which wasn’t surprisingly enough entitled “Berghain 01”, which was compiled by Andre Galluzzi, and which was quite successful, the “Ostgut Ton” label piled the fire up with it’s next release.

Marcel Dettmann, whose relation to techno can be called puristic, uses his work as Berghain dj as the guiding line for his first commercially available mix and presents a mixture of tracks, which isn’t oriented on current trends.

Dettmann, who has a long lasting relathionship with the techno genre - he discovered the music for himself in 1992 and bought his first record players at the age of 16 - organized his first techno parties in Dresden and Frankfurt/Oder, which lead him to his job as a dj in the Berghain predecessor OstGut and mutated from some frequent customer to some employee of Hard Wax - one of Berlin’s legendary record stores for electronic music.

Marcel Dettmann releases on his own label MDR as well as on Ostgut Ton, did remixes for Ellen Allien and the Rekids label. Like no other dj, his bass heavy sound represents Berghain and with “Berghain 02” he presents a compilation of his work over the years as well as a “business card” of his style.

With his irreproachable technique MD mixes tracks of all sorts and from various electronic music epochs together in a seamless way. On the release you can hear as well tracks by Kevin Saunderson, Strand and Risqué Rythum Team, as well as by Kate Simko, Radio Slave and Redshape. A combination of old Detroit and Chicago classics and newer material by tobias., Shed, Norman Nodge and Samuli Kemppi.

During it’s 72 minutes the mix inevitably pulls you into it’s spell and extends the weekend at Berghain throughout the week - from monday till friday night - until it’s finally time for another dj set by Marcel Dettmann at Berghain.

Sophisticated - hypnosis factor: 10 - belongs to every serious record collection!

Berghain 02 will be released on the 9th of July on Ostgut Ton, distributed by Kompakt. On the 7th of July there will be the record release party with shed (live), tobias. (live), samuli kimppi (live), norman nodge, marcel dettmann, cassy, margaret dygas and ewan pearson behind the turntables.
