BERLIN 68: VIEWS ON A REVOLT

The exhibiton “Berlin 68: views on a revolt” focuses on Berlin in the year 1968 and its movement.

Berlin in the year 1968, barrier between two political systems and center of the movement: West Berlin students protest for peace and liberation on the streets, fighting against social constraints, traditional morality and structures. They mostly meet with refusal and lack of comprehension. The western part of the divided city is thrown into a dither. A social upheaval seems possible, revolutionary thoughts and provocations determine the daily life of young urban people. While young people in the western part of the town protested on the streets and in universities, parts of the East Berlin youth showed their resentment against the military invasion of the Warsaw Pact in Prague otherwise.

Nearly fourty years have gone by since the last signs of revolutionary spirit occurred in Berlin.

The exhibition focuses on eight events in Berlin from 1966 to 1968, which influenced the Republic the most: First thrown eggs at the America House, the attempted “Puddingattentat” (assassination pudding") on the U.S. Vice-President, men from persia hired to applaud and the death of Benno Ohnesorg, the Senate rally for peace and freedom, “Osterunruhen” (Easter unrest) after the attack of Dutschke, the new institute’s statute at the Otto-Suhr Institute, the invasion of the ČSSR and the “Battle at the Tegeler Weg”.

Moreover the exhibition encompasses reports from witnesses of that time period. Protagonists, stakeholders, bystanders, opponents opened their private archives for the City Museum Berlin and enabled the exhibition curators to share their personal view on the events in Berlin forty years ago. Due to a collection call the City Museum Berlin discovered previously unpublished original documents, objects, film and radio materials and provides a varied insights into the Berlin life at that time.
