BERLIN ART EXHIBITIONS JULY - OCTOBER 2009

Berlin is always worth a travel is a saying which is at least true regarding the blooming arts scene.

Regarding all those events happening in the following months in Berlin, all those - hopefully less than more - summer showers open some brand new positive perspective, as you can spend some entertaining and enlightening time inside some of the Berlin museums and galleries.

As it would be impossible to present a complete list of all events happening throughout the upcoming season, find the most interesting listed below.

Art in Berlin - Focus on the Years around 1900
The earliest works in the collection of the Berlinische Galerie were created in the second half of the 19th century, an epoch characterized by radical changes. The art of the epoch, which produced a wealth of very different reactions to the changing condi-tions, is presented with works from the museum’s collection illustrating the pairs of opposites of Woman and Man, Rich and Poor, Town and Country.

Talents 15 . In Our Time . Anne Lass / Katja Melzer
The places in the photos seem familiar, the people almost recognizable, the situations common, everyday. They show normality—so normal that it’s disconcerting. Where and when were the photographs taken? Who are the people in them? How are they connected? In the search for details that might provide answers, the viewer cannot find or decipher either meanings and identities, or relationships and histories in the photographs of Anne Lass. Anne Lass’ skillful experimentation with anonymity and the lack of references is what makes her photographs so fascinating.

Juli 25 - October 04, 2009
Pierre et Gilles . Retrospective
Pierre et Gilles’s cosmos is a colorful world between baroque sumptuousness and earthly limbo. The worldwide renowned French artist pair create portraits of pop divas and film icons, sailors and princes, saints and sinners, mythological figures and unknowns in unique hand-painted photographs. Fairy paradises and lowest depths, popular iconography and History of Art - everything is considered in order to achieve an aesthetic perfection and their vision of the world, corresponding to the artists’ dreamed reality.

October 10 - December 06, 2009
Robert Frank . The Movies . 1959 - 2002
In his films, Robert Frank examines the public and private aspects of American everyday life—the modern odysseys, the familiar speechlessness, bacchanalian revelries, and sexual freedom—without pathos, but with a touch of irony. The first exhibition and only show in Germany of Robert Frankʼs entire body of audiovisual work: a total of 30 films and videos from one of the most important photographers and filmmakers of the twentieth century.

Prison is always the others
The exhibition’s approach to the prison system sees it as a part of our society with restrictions and freedoms of its own that allow the development of particular forms of discourse and exchange. The intention is to fetch the institution - prison - out of its isolated corner and to address it as a real and concrete place within society. The specially commissioned participatory works provide a link to the local prison system in Berlin.
