Chris Liebing and Juan Atkins back in Berlin
Last saturday we went to check out the [030] Party at Kulturbrauerei which featured some of our favorite DJs.
[030] is some Berlin based magazine about club culture and city life in general which is available for free around town. Once every year they are doing a party. This time it was scheduled for september 1st and we were there to check out the event which featured 50 djs on 8 floors plus several live acts.
This night at the Kulturbrauerei at Schönhauser Strasse was “the” Berlin music event of this weekend and saw a crowd of several thousand people.
The main reason why we showed up was the appearance of two men whose names will be for ever connected to the techno genre - Chris Liebing and Juan Atkins. Chris Liebing from Germany, the inventor of the synonym “Schranz” which stands for the more harder beats is one of the top german techno djs since at least ten years. Chris Liebing has a big fan base and the Berlin part of it had shown up to make his dj set one hell of an experience.
The term “Schranz” was invented by Liebing for his parties at Omen Frankfurt and still today Chris is associated with this term but in the meantime his repertoire is far more diverse than just this headbanger techno music which is something completely different than the melodies Juan Atkins offers during his sets.
After some great time we had with Chris Liebing and his set which was “very Berlin” (somehow quite minimal) at some “reduced” sound level which seems to be more and more en vogue these days (sadly enough cause i personally don’t dig if people go clubbing to engage in talks on the dance floor and thereby spoil my audiovisual experience) it was time for the grand master of techno from the american home of this genre Detroit: Juan Atkins.
Whenever i see Juan Atkins perform i am quite fascinated by his relaxed style of djing. To encounter Juan Atkins in a club or venue or at some festival means great music by some man who is in total control of his decks and spreads his love for the music across the crowd. Always with a light smile on his face and always checking the audience’s reaction Juan offered some highlights from the past and the present state of Detroit techno.
We love this man and therefore we couldn’t but take some pictures of him and Chris. As you will know by now our reports wouldn’t be complete without some nice video which is available over at BERLINISTA.tv.
