DKNY - New York Fashion Week

DKNY by Donna Karan showed it’s most beautiful face on September 7th at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

There is hardly any other fashion brand as closely connected to New York City like DKNY. If you are shopping in the SoHo disctrict you run into the DKNY signs at hardly any street corner. Born in New York 20 years ago, the DKNY style means fashion whose style is what you think about regarding the city on the banks of Hudson river.

Though Donna Karan normally doesn’t show her collections in the location of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Bryant Park, this time, no catwalk could’ve been too big for her collection consisting of more than 70 pieces and even the PETA protesters jumping on the catwalk at the end of the show couldn’t spoil the fun we and the audience had.

Throughout the catwalk the models presented a trip across the label’s fashion history. Designed to match the current fashion taste, the designs featured those neon colors which were essential in the 80’s and the mini skirts that looked more like a wide belt than a dress.

Spreading the summer spirit, the models presented waisted dresses with sashes, cute playsuits with gay prints as well as voluminous t-shirt dresses for a sexy summer 2009.

DKNY, short for Donna Karan New York, didn’t just present New York style fashion. The decoration of the catwalk was a true statement towards the city that never sleeps. A big 20 in the background surrounded by scenes from New York, as well the color of the runway which was the same yellow we all know well from the cabs, in combination with the models presenting fashion which was casual and sexy is all DKNY is famous for since 2 decades by now.

Of course, the dominating colors of the spring/summer season 2009 were present in DKNY’s designs as well. Pastels in every imaginable color and variation showed from the heads to the toes of the girls, whose feet were covered with casual boots or colorful trainers with heels.

Lead by her granddaughter Stefania, and while in a final round the models presented selected vintage items from previous collections, it was her majesty Donna Karan herself to step in front of the audience to celebrate 20 years of DKNY together with the audience which was overwhelmed and enthusiastic.

Christina Ricci, Winona Ryder and Nicole Richie were sitting front row which added to our feeling that we had just encountered one, if not the highlight of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York.
