Documenta 12 in Kassel - Artists

The Documenta at the Fridericianum in Kassel runs from tomorrow, June 16 through Sept. 23.

On view are 500 artworks strewn across venues ranging from the obvious (art museums) to the obscure (a No. 4 tram). documenta 12 will once again blur the borders between genres: for example, in the person of the sound artist Artur Zmijewski from Poland, who caused a sensation in Leipzig in 2002 with a performance of a Bach cantata by a choir of deaf-and-dumb people.

There’s also a much-debated contribution from Catalan chef Ferran Adria—not, sadly, lovely plates of foamed brats and fluffy sauerkraut swirled in almond ice cream. Curators will select visitors at random and invite them to eat his arty food at his restaurant in Cala Montjoi, Spain.

Already causing a stir are the works from artist Ai WeiWei, who is bringing 1,001 of his compatriots to Kassel to take part in an installation called “Fairytale.”

As part of Documenta 12 also Austrian artist Peter Friedl is displaying a preserved and stuffed giraffe in a work entitled “The Zoo Life”. Photo: REUTERS
