Ellen Allien is known all over the world as an a-class dj. What many don’t know is that she’s a talented fashion designer as well.
During last week’s Berlin Fashion Week Ellen Allien presented her autumn/winter 09 collection at the Apartment store near Alexanderplatz. Ellen’s new denim line is very unusual, which on the other hand makes it “so Berlin”.
“Neon lights become mirrored on rainy streets, creating colored reflections in snow crystals. The winter’s grey gets enlightened in the streets of Berlin again – I catch the vibe and put it on the jersey line city lights. The line consists of dresses and shirts for women and men, rarefied with hand printed accents of neon brushes. The nomadic world I live in, inspired me to think about all of us as city Indians.
The urban idea behind is extended in the denim line 24 hour jeans. We not only live in 24-hour rhythms, we are also globally separated into up and down. When I look around, I see the world doubled, because I try to have it all present in mind at once. With ellen allien fashion it becomes possible to express my word view into clothing. Not the straight line is of interest for me, instead I try to find the meaning in the uneven. The jeans line uses vintage denim to create something new out of the old. I reverse the up and down, I put the things in a new order. With individual items such as dresses, jackets, bustiers, shorts, pants, jumpers and bags, I want to shape the women’s perspective in a different kind. I think, we really need to see the world more playful, more connected and under open horizons nevertheless.”
