Freistil - The Black Issue | Call For Entries!

In the spring of 2009 the biannual “Freistil - Best Of European Commercial Illustration” will appear for the fourth time.

The motto of the next “Freistil” is the “Black Issue”.

BEST OF EUROPEAN COMMERCIAL ILLUSTRATION “THE BLACK ISSUE” APPEARING SPRING 2009 AT VERLAG HERMANN SCHMIDT MAINZ, GERMANY
Illustration is celebrating a comeback. Over recent years an increasing number of new media, agencies and forums have been arising for illustration and an increasing number of young people are studying graphic art. This leads to ever more images, ever more stimuliand, at some point, to arbitrariness, which already nearly puts illustration at risk. We have therefore decided to do something daring with the next FREISTIL. We are calling on illustrators to send us works exclusively in BLACK AND WHITE. They can be freelance or commissioned works, illustrations in spaces and in motion, mixed media, collages and graphite drawings…
This new and unique form of portrayal will make the works more comparable and even better emphasize their differences. As the book will nevertheless be printed in six colours (CMYK + BLACK + VARNISH), entrants have the opportunity to make the most out
of black and white and whatever lies between.

This will make FREISTIL a book that neither a website nor the usual catalogue providers can equal. First published in 2003, FREISTIL rapidly made a name for itself as both a useful and inspiring compendium for young European illustrators. It was a successful attempt to call more attention to illustration in advertising and print as well as an unprecedented link between clients and illustrators. In short: it is an annual that is needed. In the meantime, the first book (2003) is sold out and the second and third volumes of FREISTIL Ð BEST OF EUROPEAN COMMERCIAL ILLUSTRATION (2005 and 2007), each with approx. 1,000 works by more than 200 illustrators from all over Europe, have become a MUST in the studios of agencies and publishers.
In addition to licenses in Korea and Taiwan, the first original issue of FREISTIL was published in Chinese in spring of 2008 (China Youth Press).

In spring of 2009, FREISTIL 4 - BEST OF EUROPEAN COMMERCIAL ILLUSTRATION will appear for the Leipzig Book Fair. It will present the latest styles and ideas in an unusual way; in all their facets between black and white. This will offer a refreshingly genuine
look at the qualities of the artists. And a book that is a unique sensory experience.
