Fumi Nagasaka at projektGALERIE Berlin

On the 16th of July projektGALERIE Berlin presented the works of New York based artist Fumi Nagasaka.

When people talk about Berlin the term “Hype” gets frequently used. But it actually ain’t the buildings of the city which generate this globel interest in Berlin, it’s the creative people who put all their efforts in projects and try to move something, who restlessly initiate projects and make their ideas become reality.

One of those restless people is Sven Krüger, mastermind behind the projektGALERIE showrooms. Without some huge staff, without pr agency, he and the creatives he collaborates with create unique projects which generally attract a large number of interested/like-minded people. It’s the creative spirit of Berlin which can be physically sensed during those events, and which attracts a continuing flow of people from all around the world.

It was a wednesday night when Fumi Nagasaki presented her photographic project “Bahnhof Zoo” at projektGALERIE Berlin.

The Japan native moved to New York in 2001 and it was 2003 when - during a trip to Europe - she began taking picutures for Japan based cult magazine STREET. Since last year she launches her own projects which get published in Dazed & Confused, Tank and Placed.

As she told us in the interview, she got the inspiration for her project that was exhibited at Torstraße 130 from the german movie “Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo” - a movie about teenage drug addicts in Berlin of the 1970’s who mainly spent their time at the Berlin “Bahnhof Zoo” train station which used to be Berlin’s main train station during the decades when Berlin was a divided city. Fumi Nagasaka took her pictures at the original locations. Other scenes of the movie got set up by her and found some clever reinterpretation by means of her camerawork.

Fumi Nagasaka’s work isn’t just a plain copy of the well known scenes from the movie. It opens up different perspectives but on the other hand manages to put you in the same mood that the movie generates. At first sight her pictures look like snapshots, but by taking a closer look you discover how the artist cleverly chose the perspectives and how, by the thoughtful use of light and shadow, the desired mood gets created.

Matching the pictures in the exhibition perfectly, Fumi as well djed on that night, playing all those songs that are closely connected to the time when the movie was produced - back in 1981.

This opening night was one of those special Berlin nights again which gives one the perfect reason to choose Berlin as the preferred residency. Due to the big number of visitors the exhibition of designer clothes which was planned for the night as well had to be postponed till the next day. Thanks’ to projektGALERIE and Styleserver, there was enough time for the visitors to discover great designer clothes during the following days and encounter the interesting combination of art and fashion.
