Lakmé Fashion Week blends Art with Fashion

Profiles on the Participating Artists:
Ajay De: A graduate from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, and a post-graduate from Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai, Ajay De mesmerizes with his charcoal drawings.

Arzan Khambatta: His fascination with scrap and humorous titles compels him to use unusual materials in the strangest combinations. Aptly coined “SCRAPTURES”, Arzan’s sculptors are created from metal sheets, straps, rods, pipes and various other sections that are twisted, beaten and textured to give the desired effect.

Brinda Chudasama Miller: Contemporary in sensibility and form, Miller broke away from everything that’s very trendy or fashionable (read, figurative work) to bring a series of layered paintings dominated by warm blues, greens and other metallic colours, along with her favourites: earthy reds and rust.

Jayasri Burman: A member of an extended family of eminent artists, Burman works mainly in watercolor, using rich strong hues and bold themes with a mythic element—strange hybrid animals with human heads and female figures.

Laila Khan Rajpal: Trained in fine arts from Slade School of Fine Art -UK, Laila Khan Rajpal never titles her work as she feels they impose limitations and disallow the viewer their freedom to interpret. Her work has been included in many auctions in India and abroad.

Manish Gera Baswani: A modern day artist, Manish brings forth the Age old Indian miniature, folk & wall painting tradition into the Contemporary art language.

Paresh Maity: Graduating at the top of his class with a Masters of Fine Arts from the Delhi College of Arts, Paresh’s more recent paintings are bold and graphic, with a strong color and unusual cropping.

Rini Dhumal: Rini’s subjects are invariably women, like the mixed media on canvas “Queen,” or the depiction of the awesome Hindu Goddess Durga in the same medium.

Samir Mondal: Graduating from the Govt. Art College, Mondal’s most important contribution to the art of his generation is a sustained revival of water colour.

Satish Gujral: Padma Vibhushan and brother of former Indian Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, Satish is a renowned Indian painter, sculptor, muralist, graphic designer and architect.

Simeen Oshidar: Simeen’s work is influenced greatly by myth and in particular the eternal play of creation and destruction. According to the artist, they represent her belief that all animate and inanimate forms are connected in this never-ending story and this is what she tries to express in her works.

Sunil Padwal: Bold, simple, immaculate - are a few adjectives that would describe Sunil and his work. They catch your eye even if you are just passing by, and this glimpse takes you into a journey of thought and reflection.

About JAMAAT:
JAMAAT was started in January 1999. Within a short span, it has hosted some splendid shows and several interesting art activities. Pravina Mecklai, the founder of the gallery, named the gallery after her father, Jhamat, as a loving tribute. Located on the street level in the art distinct of Bombay behind the Taj Mahal Hotel, it has a contemporary design, the interplay of natural light and spots, plants, high ceilings and wooden floors create a warmth and open feel that encourages a sharing of ideas.

JAMAAT delights in bringing to Bombay, artists from all over the country and some from overseas as well. JAMAAT hosted various group and individual shows, including Gogi Saroj Pal, Laxma Goud, Raja Segar from Sri Lanka, Samir Mondal, Sarbari Roy Chowdhury and Sonja Weder from Switzerland. JAMAAT also means a “Gathering” or “Stage” which it is. More than a Gallery, it is a meeting of people, ideas and various art forms.
