Pictures of Bowie, Queen, Barrett by Mick Rock at Berlin Rock Photo Gallery
From 17th november till january 6 the Berlin Rock Photo Gallery presents Mick Rock’s photography.
During the presentation of Moonage Daydream we had the chance to encounter Mick Rock and his fantastic pictures of David Bowie presented by Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf publishers who, besides of their publishing job, run the gallery.
On friday night a very good mooded Mick Rock answered the questions of Oliver Schwarzkopf on the opening of the exhibition. The event, which displays some of the world’s best known pictures of the three artists and groups is not just an exhibition but more like what galleries usually do - sell pictures. If you visit the place you can purchase and take home any picture you like.
On friday Mick told some interesting details about the photographs, for example about the outrage one of his pictures caused which shows David Bowie kneeling in front of Mick Ronson - his guitar player during the Ziggy years - which some folks found too sexually offensive. Other stories included details about the picture shoot with Queen or that nearly most of all pictures taken of Syd Barrett back in the early days of Pink Floyd were taken by Mick Rock. Mick mentioned the importance of Syd back then when he said “Syd was not just a member of Pink Floyd, he actually was Pink Floyd!”
The Berlin Rock Photo Gallery was packed to the limit and Oliver Schwarzkopf apologized for this discomfort in the beginning which didn’t stop the people from trying to get in. After all was said and done, there was a constant flow of people leaving and arriving which kept the number of people at some pleasing level which allowed any one to take a closer look at Rock’s fine photography.
