WMC 2008 - Interview with Paul van Dyk

During a WMC radio interview Paul van Dyk revealed some secrets to some wondering audience.

On the 26th of March Paul van Dyk was a guest on Emily Tan’s SIRIUS show which was held at the Raleigh Hotel Penthouse during Winter Music Conference 2008.

Being introduced by Emily as “the biggest dj on the face of the planet” Paul van Dyk appeared to be quite relaxed and engaged in some very lightweight talk with the SIRIUS moderator.

Paul talked about the huge amounts of promos that get send to his label every day and that they listen to every single one of them cause he sees this being part of his job as a dj. “one of the best things in my life is music” was his reply when Emily asked him if it didn’t bore him sometimes - having to listen to all this promo stuff.

He sees it as a very positive aspect of todays music scene, which from his point of view, benefits from the internet cause you are free to send your creations to every label. “It would’ve been impossible for me in the old days to walk up to Derrick May and say - listen to what i’ve done”.

Paul who is, according to Emily, a socially very conscious dj next talked about his travel to India few weeks ago in order to check out some humanitarian projects. On his official website you are able to donate to this projects - the german “Rückenwind” project for example, but being asked how, Paul had to admit that as far as he knows “cause i’m not that much of an internet geek” there must be some kind of donate button somewhere on the site.

Of course they talked about his performance at WMC, headlining the Ultra Fest with his live band - so no dj set but real live music. Emily: “will you be dancing on stage?” PvD: “i might jump up and down behind my desc. I’m going to have on my flittering disco shirt.”

Paul who is nominated for 8 IDMA (International Dance Music Award) which doesn’t really come as a surprise, talked about some upcoming Beatport “Paul van Dyk remix competition” - not knowing if he should really talk about it cause it still might not be officially announced. As he told Emily, the listeners will be able to download samples from his current album to do some remix and send it to Beatport to enter the competition and maybe win one of the prizes.

The most interesting part of the interview which was very entertaining to listen to, came when some other dj showed up, telling that he had just performed at Berlin’s Weekend club the weekend before. “Oh shit” was Paul’s reply and he talked about one performance at Weekend where “half the pa was broken and the other half was wrongly connected” which ended up in “some four and a half hours sound check”. The main reasion for those problems is, from his personal point of view, the Berlin resident’s lazyness, which is caused by the low cost of living in Berlin. “That makes the people lazy”.

Before he had to rush to some panel he had to attend during WMC on that day, Paul finally announced that he’s going to spend the next month in Berlin, doing some office work and playing with the dogs.
