Y-3 - New York Fashion Week
Y-3 - the project of Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas presented it’s latest designs during New York Fashion Week at an off-site location.
Sportswear is the main topic of the collaboration of the japanese fashion designer and the german sportswear company which, between the big sports events like the Olympics and the Football Worldcup, is struggling hard to compete with brands like Nike who have realized way ahead of Adidas, that sportswear can be worn in more places than just the sports fields.
For several years now Yohji Yamamoto is in charge for the exclusive sportswear line Y-3 and the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week event which took place in a former Barnes & Noble bookstore in Chelsea’s Flatiron district, was another proof of Yamamoto’s expertise in creating something very stylish for the brand with the three stripes.
To the sounds of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, some electronic music act from Japan with a tradition that spans across 30 years, the models walked along the minimalist catwalk, illuminated by neon lights hanging from the ceiling.
Celebs like Vincent Gallo, Sean Paul, Ellen Pompeo, Veronica Webb, Genevieve Jones, Casey Spooner, Amanda Hearst and Chris Ivery could see hoodies, running shorts, pencil skirts, nylon anoraks in mostly black color. The girls looked very cool with their grunge style skirts, made out of transparent materials and every now and then - like in the bridal dress - revealed the Y-3 logo under the layers of nylon.
The collection, just like the venue, the lighting and the music was very sophisticated. Besides of some pieces they aren’t made for the gym.
Pre-washed fabrics were used in some of the designs, giving them a vintage feel which will attract the hipsters in all fashionate cities and will conquer the streets of our hometown Berlin as well as the New York City pavements.
Like in Berlin you’ll find the Y-3 spring/summer 2009 collection in selected stores or in one of the Y-3 flagship stores like the one in the hip Meatpacking district, or the latest New York store in Soho, which opened on September 9th - right on time for all the travelling fashionistas who’d like to bring some cool item back home from New York Fashion Week.
