In media, women in hip hop most of the time get presented as the scantily dressed background dancers.

Though b-girls and other hip hop women offer some strong role model to adolescent girls. They show how to gain their place in today’s youth culture as independent women. The international “Year of the Hip Hop Women” - starting in march 2008 - deals with the different aspects of women in hip hop culture. There will be numerous events around the world around the topic.

The opener for the upcoming events in Germany will be some Aerosol Art event in Berlin Kreuzberg on the international womens day which goes by the motto “International Women`s Day - ALL FEMALE Jam Berlin”. Yound women who have played some important role in Berlin’s writing history will design a wall at the Hall Of Fame - Alte Feuerwache in Kreuzberg (Oranienstraße 96, right next to the Bundesdruckerei) on saturday, the 8th of march, starting at 12 pm. Azem, Chika, Chy, Danone, Fiona, Jolie, MiaOne and Sheran will attend.

In summer Berlin will be the showplace as one of the highlights of the year: In august the so far biggest female hip hop festival in europe will take place in the capital city of Germany. With support by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds, We B*Girlz ProductionsZ will organise some four weeks international festival in different Berlin boroughs: We B*Girlz - A festival by and for women in hip hop. With loads of workshops, panel discussions, movies, exhibitions, battles and shows, the festival celebrates the creativity of women and girls in hip hop culture.

The “Year of the Hip Hop Women” is organized by We B*Girlz, the Hip Hop Association, Social Services of Hip Hop and some other organisations. A website will accompany the event. In addition a book and some international project tour are in preparation.
